Crohn’s disease (CD) is along with ulcerative colitis the most common  form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It mainly affects the intestines but all the digestive tract parts can be affected, that is from  the mouth to the end of the rectum.  It can also affect other parts of the body such as eyes and skin and some patients can feel fatigue.

Symptoms of Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease of the small intestine may cause obstruction of the intestine. Crohn’s disease can be associated with the following symptoms:
– Abdominal pain
– Diarrhea
– Vomiting
– Fever
– Weight loss
– Tender skin nodules
– Inflammation of the joints, spine, eyes, and/or liver

Causes of Crohn’s disease

The main cause for Crohn’s disease seems to be a dis-regulation in the michrobiome of the gut which leads to the body’s immune system attacking the gastrointestinal tract possibly directed at microbial antigens, causing chronic inflammation. There are also environmental and immune factors in genetically susceptible individuals.

Treatment of Crohn’s disease

Treatment of CD with cannabis has proven to be extremely successful, even in children, much more than conventional therapies and with little to no side affects.

Cannabis works on all the main debilitating symptoms of CD. It prevents inflammation of the gastro intestinal tract (GI tract), prevents symptoms of diarrhoea by reducing intestinal motility and fluid secretion,  eases chronic pain and stimulates appetite.

Tinctures made from cannabis extracts by ingestion, are the preferred method of use as the target go to the GI tract and target the specific receptors that are present there.
